Alexander City is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 7,651 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Jefferson County and is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Alexander" comes from General Alexander Graham Bell. The city was founded in 1836 by John Coker and James Tatum as a post office on the west bank of Mobile River. In 1847, it became the capital of Jefferson County when Alabama became a state. In 1906, Alexander City acquired its current location on what had been an agricultural district east of downtown that had grown to include over 90 businesses and 1,000 people due to its proximity to railroads and other transportation options. This area would eventually become known as Downtown Alexander City because many new businesses were built here during this time period including Waffle House (now called Waffle House & Coffee), ABC News Headquarters (now Jiffy Lube), Sears Roebuck & Company's department store complex (now known as Sears Tower), Masonic Temple (now demolished), and much more. Downtown Alexander City experienced significant growth following World War II thanks to the influx of military personnel and their families who wanted access to all of the new shopping opportunities that were available in Birmingham-Hooverduring that time period. After the war ended, Downtown Alexandersxpanded once again with several thousand residents buying properties along Center Street between Pratt Avenue and Seminary Avenue which now forms most of today's business district centered around First Baptist Church across from US Airways Center/Chrysler plant on Central Park Drive - one mile south of downtown! This late 20th century growth spurt has left Downtown Alexesponticularly vibrant with both retail storefronts as well as restaurants, bars/libraries/ nightclubs - providing a great variety for shoppers throughout day or evening!

The population of Alexander City grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s, due to its strategic location at the crossroads of two major routes connecting Mobile with Chattanooga and Nashville. By 1870, Alexander City had a population of over 10,000 people. Alexander City's economy changed dramatically after it became an important transportation hub between Mobile and Birmingham. It became one of the leading cotton plantations in Alabama during this time period. In addition to its primary role as a transportation hub, Alexander City also developed into a manufacturing center for items such as textiles and shoes. During World War II, Alexander City played an important role in helping to build military bases throughout south Alabama including Fort Polk and Chattahoochee Air Force Base. After the war ended,Alexander City experienced rapid growth again thanks to tourism opportunities which have continued to this day.
