Alexander City is a city in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile–Tuscaloosa metropolitan area. The website for Alexander City suggests that it "was founded by pioneers in 1872." The city was named after General Robert E. Lee and his wife Mary Anna Alexander. A post office called Alexander City was established in 1875, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1909, the name of the city changed to Alexander after Generalobert Halleck's visit to Mobile and his recommendations for a new capital for Alabama. The first store in town opened its doors on December 12, 1872, when J[ohn] W[illiam] Fenton opened a general store on Second Street just south of present-day Fourth Street. By 1886 there were 10 stores in the community with an average selling price of $2 per week. In 1902, James P[hiaudre] took over as Mayor and soon became known as one of Mobile's most influential leaders during this time period due to his aggressive business practices which helped spur downtown growth including construction of many brick buildings now seen throughout town center today such as the Masonic Temple (1898), Post Office (1909), Bank (1910), Southern Pacific Depot (1912) and several other businesses which remain much active today thanks to their continued popularity among locals and visitors alike! In 1907 three local farmers pooled their resources to purchase 3 acres east of present day Fourth Street from Conecuh Creek Railroad Company president Eli Lilly & Co., becoming what is now known as "the Alex' family" – George Washington Alex Jr., John Alex (Jr.),and Lucius Alex – all descendants of original founders Robert E.] Lee & Mary Anna Alexander who had settled here some time beforehand! Today many citizens know only one or two members from that initial group which has grown into a multi-generational+ family history dynasty! It should be noted that even though initially everything within these walls revolved around agriculture our current downtown skyline owes much debt both musically and architecturally to renowned Modernist MasterBuilders like Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid’s Bob Hope/Dorothy Day/Emmie Smith /Jimmy Dean type projects completed during those early days following World War II when “Mobile was reborn” according to then Mayor Allen Jarrell whose vision included tearing down several old obstructing buildings including Confederate Memorial Hall/ neo-gothic style former Woolworth Building currently occupied by Chewy’s restaurant inside what used to be First Baptist Church prior thereto! So long ago it seems... And yet not so very different from today’s booming commercial district vibrant with energy & life just blocks away wherein we often see many veterans enjoying meals at various local restaurants along East Ninth Street etc….. virtually every block & major street corner features some form or another business or activity geared towards tourists &Visitors alike makingAlexanderCityOneOfAmerica’sMostAttractingCities

The town prospered during the early 1800s thanks to its location on the Tennessee River, which made it easy for settlers to get goods and materials needed for their farmsteads downriver. However, around 1851 a flood destroyed much of the town, leaving it abandoned for many years. In 1895, however, Alexander City re-emerged as a center of agriculture due to new irrigation systems brought over from Texas. By 1900, Alexander City had reached its peak as a commercial and industrial center with several small businesses lining Main Street. However, by World War II the economy had slumped and most of the buildings were destroyed in an fire that swept through the community in 1945.
