Hargrave won with 70% of the vote and became the first African American to holdoffice in Birmingham since Reconstruction began. 2 In 1990, after more than 40 years of service as an unincorporated community withinJefferson County, Alexander City incorporated as a city under state law No 21992 which provided for municipal elections to be held at least every 5 years instead of annually like those taking place within Birmingham Municipal Association Incorporation at that time which gave rise to some tension between both cities over control over certain aspects such as zoning ordinances and other issues not affecting either but having much greater impact on residents within each city combined including school property taxes while residentsofBirmingham received tax breaks without any corresponding increase or revenue sharing from their larger neighbor

With good schools came good citizens who were responsible for providing civic amenities such as churches, libraries, fire departments etcetera- all essential components of early 19th century society. In 1865, Major General John Crayton granted permission forAlexanderCity’s incorporation as a municipality with full voting privileges under Alabama state law which marked an increase in civic responsibility within the nascent community. By 1870,AlexanderCity had reached its current size with over 1,000 residents living within its boundaries In 1909-10 Mayor Nellie A Harrell spearheaded an effort to clean up downtown streetscape which resulted in major funds being raised local government coffers through private donations From 1910 until 1975 much of downtown business activity took place out front on Market Street rather than inside old brick buildings because this allowed businesses more exposure while still remaining indoors during bad weather conditions . This type of architecture is often referred to as Old School Architecture because it characterized post-WWII Birmingham through decades where large blocks anchored by two or three stories have been replaced by more spread out structures with several stories . Many landmarks associated with this period including Gadsden Capitol Theatre (now known as Majestic Theatre), First Baptist Church (1912) Masonic Temple (1923), Pritchett Library (1935) are also now preserved within city limits .
