Alexander City is a small town in southern Alabama, population 6,808 as of the 2010 census. It is located in Montgomery County and is part of the Birmingham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by General Alexander McGillivray in 1884. The town's first post office was established in 1885. The name comes from the Cherokee word "alexander," which means "prominence." In 1865, General Alexander McGillivray led an expedition against the Creek Nation near present-day Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was later honored with a Congressional Medal of Honor for his role in that battle. After serving as a United States Congressman from Alabama from 1898 to 1902, General McGillivray became President McKinley's Ambassador to France in 1912. He also served as United States Coordinator of World Affairs during World War I. He died at age 90 on November 26, 1942, and is buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia

Alexander City experienced some hard times during the Great Depression but persevered through overcome adversity. After World War II, the economy revived thanks to new technology and jobs that were created by aerospace businesses such as Lockheed Martin and Boeing Corporation. In recent years, Alexander City has seen a growth in revitalization with several smaller businesses opening up around downtown including an arts center., multiple breweries (the most popular being Blue Moon Brewery), a new casino/resort called The Sands Resort & Casino and more development announced for 2018-2021
In 1819, Alexander City was founded by John Alexander and his wife, Fanny. The town was named for the battle of Culloden which took place in 1746. In 1865, Alexander City became the terminus of the Mobile and Montgomery Railroad.
