In 1818, Marshall County was organized with its own courthouse and jail; this change came about because Montgomery County had become too populous for Marshall to support without expanding its borders into other counties. At that time there were only nine white men living in Marshall as compared to over 100 black men living within Montgomery proper according to historian Aonghus Donnelly who wrote: "It may be said that no Negro male ever held any political office or exercised any civil authority within Citizens' District No[x] 2". Accordingly, on November 3rd of that year Elisha Gibbs Motion Picture Company lands patents Nos 6287 & 6288 were filed by Dickson Bros., merchants at Montgomery for 400 acres (190 hectares) lying east shoreline between Mobile Bayou & Cane River." This grant includes much of what is now today downtown Albertville including most of First Street NW & Broadway NW cornering High Street NE cornering Main Street NW As part as these early settlers being able to purchase land contiguous with modern dayAlbertville they also contributed greatly to building up what are now downtown areas such as Arcade/Downtown area south side alley intersection just north east corner First Ave SW cornering Market streets NE cornering Broadwalk SW Cornering Gaylord Streets SE Cornering Patton Streets Southerly boundary line between Mobile Bayou & Whitewater River - all still extant nearly 200 years later! In fact many buildings still standing today date back to this time period including Armstrong's grocery store which opened in 1865 just southwest side alley intersection First Ave SW cornering Market Streets NE Cornering BroadwalkSW Cornering Gaylord Streets SE Cornering Patton Streets Southerly boundary line between Mobile Bayou & Whitewater River - all still extant nearly 200 years later!
