From 1922 to 1962, Albertville was also home to the United States Army's 5th Cavalry Regiment (later redesignated as 1st Cavalry Division). In 1830 Witherspoon's son James bought 1 acre (0 hectares) of land near present day downtown Albertville for $10 per acre ($140 per hectare). James named his tract "Witherspoon's Landing" because he had originally come ashore there during his ill-fated attempt to find passage home on horseback across Lake Jackson while supplies were running low with steamboats available only on reaching Mobile Bay instead. This landing served as both residential development (the house built by James Witherspoon himself can still be seen today) as well as commercial center due to its proximity to Interstate 65; this being especially true during prohibition times when bootlegging became one of the most important aspects of local economy despite efforts by law enforcement officials not to investigate illegal activitiestaker/owners).
