Some sources claim that as many as 100 people were killed and more than 200 wounded whenGrant's cavalry charged into the village square after finding it abandoned by its inhabitants; according to historian David Garroway, however, only six or seven civilians were killed outright and most of those fatalities occurred within 500 yards of where Grant had initially halted his troops . Some historians also assert that Grant did not enter into battle until after dark due to darknessening skies above Chattanooga after clashes between Federal forces and Confederate artillerymen across several miles east of town

Alabaster is a city in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 3,083 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. Alabaster is located on the Pearl River about 20 miles north of downtown Birmingham and 40 miles south of Huntsville. The town site was chosen for its strategic location on two important routes: the Muscle Shoals Railroad to Muscle Shoals and Mobile Bayou to Mobile Bayou. The town's name comes from a local rock formation called "Alabaster," which is a black volcanic glass that occurs only in Alabama. In 1892, white men prospected for coal here and named the area "Alabaster" after this locality. They first discovered coal here in 1894 but did not mine it until 1896 when they leased land from the federal government and began extracting coal with underground shafts. In 1898, Alabaster had a population of 350 people; by 1910 it had reached 5,083 people. Coal mining continued through World War II but then stopped because of economic changes and competition from other industries such as steel production. After World War II, there were few jobs available for miners so many left Alabaster for other areas in Alabama or Tennessee where jobs were plentiful. From 1960 to 1990 most residents worked in manufacturing or service activities such as food processing or poultry handling although some still commute into Birmingham to work at companies like Boeing or NASA headquarters (the latter being now owned by Lockheed Martin). Most businesses have closed down over time due to technological advancements including online shopping etc., although some are still open as restaurants or small businesses catering to locals and tourists alike who visit Alabaster during tourist season between November 1-March 1 each year pursuant to an agreement between Mayor John Daugherty and Visitors Bureau Director Rick Cooksey which started back in 2002 among others It all came full circle when Trump International Hotel & Tower opened its doors just blocks away from where generations of residents once gathered around theircoal firesides turning out lace cuffs and buttoning sweaters while listening to stories about General Robert E Lee
