Alabaster is a small town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville–Decatur metropolitan area. Alabaster is located on State Route 310 and has a post office called Alabaster. The first people to live in what is now Alabaster were members of the Cherokee Nation who established a trading post there in 1821. In 1834, Judge John Hance organized the first white school in Marshall County when he donated land for it near present-day Vestavia Hills. The townspeople voted to incorporate as a municipality on January 10, 1907. In 1933, the Works Progress Administration built two dams across Little Tennessee River and constructed an artificial levee around present-day Alabaster so that water could be diverted from the river for irrigation purposes. The levee also served as a recreational area for locals and visitors until 1974 when it was decommissioned and demolished due to overuse by farmers and developers. In 1984, Huntsville businessman Donny Hathaway purchased Chilton Dam which forms most of the eastern border of Alabaster; this allowed him to develop much of what is now downtown Huntsville into new retail and commercial areas including several high-rise buildings that still stand today (the original Hoover Dam). As such, much of downtown became morecellularized than it once was due to Hathaway's investments - until recently all business activity occurred outside of Downtown Huntsville proper even though portions have been renovated into new businesses or restored back to their pre-Hathaway glorys since then (see Downtown Huntsville map). Alabaster's history begins with its incorporation as a municipality on January 10th 1907 by citizens via referendum.. When Judge John Hance donated land for his Alma High School campus in 1924 he also contributed money towards building one dam across Little Tennessee River which would become known as Chilton Dam later...
