They also bought some land around what is now Alabaster to build a house on in 1830; their home still stands today as a contributing structure to the community that was founded thirty years later by James Crouse and others including John Whitehead, George Witherspoon, Moses Ferguson, James Fenton, Ebenezer Cooke Sr., Isaac Bowen Jr., Daniel Boone Sr., Jesse Hardin, Jacob Headley and Andrew Moorehouse In 1851 Captain Fenton sold 640 acres northwest of town to Jno Eller for $2 per acre ($40) Eller developed this tract into one of the most important cotton plantations in Alabama with over 400 slaves working it during the early 1800s It was here that Elijah Muhammad learned how to read & write while living with his father Abdul Aziz Muhammad Alabaster's incorporation as a municipality took place on November 14, 1907 under the name "Limestone" after the limestone quarries which have been provide much of its economic prosperity . The citizens voted not only to incorporate but also set up their own police department which became operational October 1st 1908 . In 1916 city voters approved an ordinance providing for fire hydrants , street lights , water mains and other public works . In 1980 city voters passed an ordinance allowing for retail development within limits freed from zoning ordinances since then there has been no limit to development although some restrictions are placed upon commercial use such as limits on height or number of stories
