Alabaster is a city in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,581 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. Alabaster was founded by settlers from North Carolina in 1851. The first post office was established in Alabaster on December 10, 1853. The city began to grow rapidly after railroads arrived in the early 1860s and a canal was constructed through its territory. By 1870, Alabaster had become one of the largest cities in Marshall County with over 2,000 residents and it boasted two churches and several businesses including a livery stable and silk mill. The Panic of 1907 caused many small local businesses to fail and this led to an increase in crime rates which also hurt the city's economy. However, thanks to efforts by Mayor John A. Maynard Jr., Alabaster experienced a resurgence during World War I as defense manufactures increased their production within the city limits. Afterward, mayor Maynard spearheaded various social programs that aimed to revive downtown areas such as creating a park system and providing services such as public restrooms for citizens living on low incomes or without access to baths or other sanitation facilities.
