Alabaster is a town in Sumter County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville-Decatur metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1872 by John Pemberton and others who were interested in developing a salt mine near the current site of town. Alabaster became an incorporated municipality in 1907. The first post office in Alabaster was established on December 12, 1872, by John Pemberton with the name "Emmalax." On November 8, 1875, the post office changed its name to "Alabaster" and became a full township on February 13th of that year. On July 1st 1886, Alabaster officially became a city with voting rights and from then until it lost them to Huntsville on January 1st 1969 it functioned as a satellite city of Huntsville. In 1907 the City Council voted to change its name back to Alabaster Township after merging with other townships within Sumter County including Pleasant Hill (1868), Decatur (1873), Muscle Shoals (1914), and Hensley Heights (1916). On October 15th 1909 when Alabama statehood occurred new legislation created Lauderdale County which absorbed all of Sumter County save for Alabaster which remained an unincorporated township within Sumter County until merged into Lauderdale County on January 1st 1959 when it also lost voting rights to Huntsville due to its size difference. In 1915 white farmers started moving into what would become known as Black Belt country around Birmingham so they could raise cotton and sell it while black farmers continued growing corn and hay for local livestock feedstock; this led to some competition over land use between these two groups leading eventually to segregation by race in schools and other areas throughout Alabama
