Alabaster is a small town in central Alabama, United States. The population was 1,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville–Decatur metropolitan area. Alabaster is located on the outskirts of Huntsville, about 20 miles (32 km) north of Birmingham and 25 miles (40 km) south of Decatur. The first people to live in what is now Alabaster were Native Americans who hunted and gathered natural resources in the area. In 1819, Colonel John Fultz traveled through this area and named it after his home state of Virginia, which he had just visited. The name stuck and Alabaster grew up around Fultz's headquarters at nearby Mount Weatherford until it became its own town in 1907 when he sold all his holdings to the citizens. Alabaster has been spelled "Albatross" since 1836 when Alexander McGregor renamed it for himself because he found rocks there that resembled an albatrosses' wingspan. After decades of variations, such as "Allbright", "Allenbadge", and finally "Albazara", the current spelling was adopted on November 15, 1957 by the Alabama Legislature following recommendations from a committee chaired by Representative Floyd Hagell Jr., D-Montgomery.
