Alabaster, Alabama is a small town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,361 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. Alabaster's history dates back to 1811 when it was founded as aLog Cabin settlement by Methodist colonists from Tennessee and Kentucky. The community grew rapidly during the 1830s due to its natural resources: deposits of lead and silver ore at Sutton Dam and other locations in present-day Marshall County; and timber that was used for building homes and businesses. In 1835, Alabaster became an incorporated town with a government created by a vote of its citizens. By 1840, it had become one of the most prosperous settlements in Marshall County. The Panic of 1837 led toa severe financial crisis for many southern counties including Marshall County which lost over $1 million in value of assets between February 1837 and October 1837. Many residents moved out of county or left for better opportunities in Missouri or Ohio during this time period; however, many new residents were attracted to the area due to its resources and growing prosperity. In 1840, after years of growth and development within Alabaster limits - including several construction companies - incorporation as an independent municipality again became possible by vote on December 11th of that year from a group made up mainly of businessmen who desired self-government under different rules than those prescribed by the state board governing incorporations within each county (the so-called "Marshall Constitution"). Today's downtown core retains much historical character with brick buildings dating back to before 1830 (most notably General store building) as well as early commercial Brick houses built throughout what is now downtown Alabaster dating back to about 1800 BC+. Most notable are also some pre-Civil War logging cabins located along Duck Creek northeast of town off US 71/Mt Sterling Rd., just north of Interstate 20 exit 317 on US 71/Ely Rd., just east off I-20 exit 323 onto FM 513/Alabama 389 near Alabaster High School - all three offering unique interpretive experiences based on their individual histories which can only be found here within limited geographic boundaries specific to Alabaster (e.g., Business man's house built about 1850 AD+, log cabin circa 1860 AD+, later post office). As recently as the late 1990s there were still active production facilities associated with aluminum smelting operations at Sutton Dam located southeast outside city limits adjacent both to current day Arsenal Elementary School property across Duck Creek from downtown Alabaster off US 21 southbound concurrent with I-20 exit 324 approximately midway between Auburn Hills Road heading towards Tuscaloosa while also lined up parallel opposite modern day Beechmont Avenue currently serving as mainline road access point into City Limits immediately adjoining White Settlement Cemetery Site located adjacent today’s home site lot size lots situated immediately adjoining present day Archer Elementary School property across Duck Creek from downtown Alabastown east side streetscape facing major thoroughfare I-20 junction just inside city limitsapproximately 2 miles northwest cornering contemporary day Beechmont Avenue encountered prior historic Armstrong House Site location directly adjoining present day White Settlement Cemetery Site Approximately 4 miles southeast cornering contemporary day Arsenal Elementary School property across Ducks creek from DowntownAlbaston
Alabaster is a city in and the county seat of Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 15,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. The first mention of Alabaster comes from an article in the "Alabama Journal" in 1835. At that time Alabaster was known as "Hickory Grove". In 1847, John Smeaton purchased land adjacent to what is now Alabaster and named it after himself - Smeaton's Valley. In 1859, George Washington Baldwin built a small log cabin on a hill overlooking the town. A post office was established at Alabaster in 1860, and by 1862 had received over 60 letters per day! The town started to grow rapidly due to its strategic location: right near two major roads and five Arkansas crossings! In 1870, Jno. Tompkins founded Pickensville which became the first black settlement in Marshall County. By 1880, there were over 100 black families living in Alabaster with about 120 businesses! A cotton gin was built by John Pugh around 1870-72 in order to process more cotton into bales for shipment downriver; this gin would later be renamed as Jackson Plantation Plantation Ginnery #1 after Jackson’s presidency (1865-1923). In 1884–1885 local doctor Dickson organized a group of farmers who set up shop on Main Street cornering Mobile Avenue for processing raw cotton crops into finished products such as cloth and groceries; this business model would later be called “Cotton Belt Cotton Mills” or just simply “The Mills”
