Alabaster is a town in Bibb County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town of Alabaster was first settled by European Americans in 1819 as a farming community on the edge of what is now Mobile County. When Alabama became a state in 1907, Alabaster became one of its original cities. The city grew rapidly and by 1920 had more than 5,000 residents. Manufacturing and service sectors dominated the town's economy until the 1970s when Boeing moved its headquarters to downtown Birmingham and other manufacturers closed their plants throughout Alabama. In 2000, Alabaster voters passed an ordinance increasing their voting power by adding staggered terms for mayor and council members; this change increased turnout in local elections from 51% to 67%. In 2002, after years of discussion between Mayor Byron Lowenthal and several business interests who unsuccessfully lobbied for passage of a referendum opposing annexation into New York City due to concerns about traffic congestion,[1] Alabaster voted to become an annexed municipality - becoming one of only two towns in Alabama (the other being Vestavia Hills) that have done so since 1995 when metropolitanBirmingham compacted with Hoover.[2][3] This vote set off controversy as many people within rural Bibb County saw annexation as an opportunity for city dwellers to take over much needed farmland while they were left without representation on city council - leading some Residents to try and block annexation through peaceful protests during subsequent municipal meetings; these protests ultimately failed but raised public awareness about how annexed municipalities are created and can be used by businesses seeking exclusive control over government services[4]. In 2006, under Mayor Lowenthal's leadership, Alabaster again voted to annex into New York City; this time it was successful with New Yorkers electing him mayor despite opposition from his own constituents who cited fears that they would lose access to important economic development opportunities if their town were annexed into another municipality.
