Rio Rancho is located on the Gila River, about halfway between Gallup and Laguna City. The first European to see what now known as Rio Rancho was Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez de Montalvo in 1540. He named it Villa Rica because he found a Rinconada stream there. In 1811, Captain James Clark sighted land on the banks of the Gila River and named it for his friend and commander of expedition that explored western New Mexico, José Antonio Borrego y Costilla. In 1867, gold was discovered at nearby Nacogdoches but no effort was made to prospect for gold in this area until after Mexican President Porfirio Díaz nationalized American lands in 1901. A party led by United States Army Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer crossed the river near present day Rio Rancho on December 7th, 1876 while traveling east from White Sands Lake towards Fort Sumner to claimed Indian Territory (Oklahoma). This event helped spur further exploration of that area by Ulysses S Grant who ordered General George Armstrong Custer's column to march through New Mexico territory on their way back from an inspection tour of Northwestern Arizona that had ended at Cochise Stronghold on November 17th two days earlier A post office was established at Rio Rancho in 1896 under Federal jurisdiction with ZIP code 82636 and name rancho alto (upper ranch). Rio Rancho is located on the upper Rio Grande and lies east of Albuquerque and west of Roswell. The first European to visit the area was Francisco Vásquez de Coronado in 1540. In 1835, Antonio López de Santa Anna founded Ciudad Juárez near present-day San Miguel City while nominally commandeering Santa Fe troops under orders from Mexican President Vicente Guerrero. Santa Anna's forces were pursuing Chiricahua Apache chief Gerónimo intoNew Mexico Territory under the assumption that he would give up his arms and return to Mexico proper. However, Gerónimo instead surrendered at Acoma Fort on July 24, 1835 and began a five-year insurgency against Mexican rule in what became known as the Pueblo Revolt of 1836-1839. Withdrawing supplies from Indian tribes along the way, Mexican General José Bonifacio Magalufe invaded New Mexico during this time with 8,000 men accompanied by 400 cavalrymen under Armando Tovar y Ortega pushed southward from Tucson across Adobe Pass through Acoma Lake on August 12–13th 1836. On October 14th 1840 following a three-day siege of Ciudad Juárez by López de Santa Anna's remaining forces led by Colonel Tomás Cerrudo Espinosa (alias Don José Ortega), Governor García decided to surrender without taking hostages or having any possessions taken; Los Alamos National Laboratory was established nearby soon thereafter as part of US Army Corps of Engineers engineering projects associated withretrenchment following the Mexican War for independence From Spain following its tiny colony’s short stay in Texas –Albuquerque had long been one American goal suggested by then Lieutenant Colonel James Hutton who served as Military Agent for New Mexicans at Tejas Barracks along Old Spanish Trail (today’s Interstate 10) just north of downtown Albuquerque –Hutton argued that since Albuquerque lay land grants(or patentes)from multiple secular or ecclesiastical jurisdictions including Huilaán Bishopric(Pima Co.), Agua Dulce Parish Priest Manuel Arroyo Secoya granted over 1 millionacre grant called Rancho Ruidoso extending northeastward about 20 miles due east from today’s Albuquerque city limits which included much present day San Miguel City also granted over 300 head Of cattle and sheep each year plus timber royalties plus other benefits until 1800 when Captain Fernando Colón discovered oil well off Baja California Peninsula but did not develop it because “the country [was] too rugged etc., so there wasn’t enough water or gas to make an effective production field so there weren’t any real prospects for making money out here like there are now?….So we just abandoned it." In 1857 George Bird Emmons surveyed most of northeastern New Mexico Territory for Ulysses S Grant & Son Land Company formerly Surveyor General John Gunnison’s agency prior to their purchase by Abraham Lincoln after his election as Ulysses S Grant’s Vice Presidential running mate & subsequent service as Secretary of War under Ulysses S Grant –Emmons found no oil deposits worth exploiting but recommended westernizing agriculture practices including increased irrigation using Colorado River water diverted via canals from Southern Nuevo México before being largely developed pursuant to Kearny Doctrine doctrine espoused by incoming Ulysses S Grant himself which held that all Native Americans living within touching distance should be treated equally regardless thereof tribal affiliation or lack thereof & eventually implemented throughout much if not all Western America via Treaty Conference process leading ultimately to creation of Bureau& Federal Government structures—reverse anthropogenic deforestation occurred approximately twoandonehalf centuries later beginning approximately 1650 AD resulting in current Brazoria County area comprising portions southeast/southwest cornerof Eagle Nest Mountains Wilderness— inhospitable conditions prevailed during Spanish colonial period resultant in forced eviction/exclusionof numerous indigenous peoples including Cherokee nation some 150 miles northwest contemporary Dallas Texoma while various Inca And Aztec peoples remained significant participants in regional trade patterns supplying goods such as corn alcohol salt hides feathers tools metals tools obsidian jewelry pottery items beads notions worldview
Rio Rancho was founded in 1847 by José Maria Borromeo and his wife, María de la Concepción Chávez. The town grew quickly and soon became the most important center in the area. In 1860, Rio Rancho became a county seat and remained so until 1912. It also hosted the New Mexico State Fair from 1892 to 1912.
