The first rifle to be imported into St. Louis was the Springfield Rifle from England in 1836. It had a short stock and it used field review cartridges which were fired from a long arm rather than using pistols as they were done back then. The next rifle to come into town was the Model 1838 French rifle which had an octagonal magazine with 10 rounds inside it and two rifles could be carried at once. The first pistol to be manufactured in St. Louis was the Colt Pistol in 1839 which fired only 7 round single-action revolvers like most other pistols at that time (it wasn’t until after Colt invented the lever action pistol that this type of pistol became common). In 1861, when America became involved in the Civil War, there were large numbers of guns coming into town from all over Europe including France, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Spain and Sweden etc etc etc….. Some of these guns even ended up being used by American troops on battle fields before they were eventually surrendered or melted down………. In 1865 another new kind of gun came into town called the shotgun which would soon become widely popular for target shooting……….

The history of firearms in St. Louis, Missouri can be traced back to the 1800s. In 1819, there was a gun battle between United States Marines and Native Americans in what is now known as old St. Louis. The fight resulted in the death of one marine and the wounding of several others. This event helped create an interest in shotguns and rifles among the American public, which would later lead to their use in combat. In 1832, a group of farmers founded the first rifle club in Illinois. It was soon followed by another group in Missouri. These clubs were designed to improve shooting skills so that gunmen could defend themselves against horse thieves or other attackers. Ammunition for these guns was often gathered from local barns or animal herds, which also served as ammunition stores for other militias around town. By 1839, there were at least fifteen rifle clubs active throughout Missouri including one located in Saint Louis that met monthly outside City Hall on Ewing Street under President James Ketchum’s guidance. Rifle matches were also held at various places such as Critchfield Park near downtown and Greendale Farms near Poplar Bluff on the White River where teams of three shot match pistols at 50 yards each while reloading using calico bags filled with ballpoint ink! On July 4th, 1838, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Nashville to St. Louis after being elected president on August 3rd that year. He quickly became interested in firearms and ordered all arsenals statewide be expanded to include more rifles and pistols so that they could be used against Indian raids north of the Mississippi River (which had been ongoing since 1830). On October 15th of that year – less than two weeks after taking office – Jackson signed a bill into law making it legal for citizens “to carry any kind of gun whatever [they] may have stored within their house or place of business” without having first obtained a license from city officials (emphasis added). This measure marks the beginning of firearm regulation within city limits in America! During this time period, handguns continued to be popular among civilians due to their relatively low cost (compared to rifles) and easy availability; however, they would not become fully prevalent until well into the 1840s when stricter regulations began increasing demand for firearms by both government officials and private individuals alike throughout America (due largely to Napoleonic Wars-era hostilities).
