The first Europeans to arrive in what is now St. Louis were French traders and travelers who journeyed through the area in the 16th century. In 1803, British explorer James K. Polk passed through the area on his way to find a new route to China via Louisiana. He noted the town’s impressive architecture – including an early Roman fortress – and named it after General James K. Polk’s father-in-law, Ulysses S. Grant Sr., who was then governor of Missouri (until 1868). The town came into existence as a small trading post on the southern bank of the Mississippi River between Fort Clark at modern day Ferguson and Independence Heights at modern day Webster Groves. In 1861, during America’s Civil War, St. Louis was garrisoned by Confederate forces under General David Ewing until Union forces arrived and drove them out of town on July 2nd of that year. The Battle of Pea Ridge took place nearby on July 6th which saw heavy Confederate losses; however, St Louis remained largely unscathed overall due to its strategic location within easy striking distance of both Kansas City and Chicago (both major Union military strongholds). The following year saw another pivotal event when Abraham Lincoln was elected president; as a result, Missouri became part of the United States along with all other northern states that seceded from Great Britain in 1783.) StLouis experienced some significant growth during this time period; for example, construction began on what is now known as Washington University in 1865 which helped create one of the most selective universities in America today (the university has since grown multiple timeslarger than its original incarnation). Additionally, work began on what is now MidAmerica Ballpark which turned out to be one of baseball’s most iconic stadiums; it hosted games for both MLB teams Detroit Tigers (now called Coors Field) and Cleveland Indians from 1973-1996 before being replaced by Busch Stadium starting in 1999.) A number of other historic buildings also underwent renovation or were completed during this time period including First National Bank building which still stands today (and features interesting exhibits related to its history), State Capitol Building (renovated circa 1907), Grand Army Plaza(renovated 1912), Druid Hill Park(opened 1895), Euclid Avenue streetcar line(opened 1896), etc.; all are worth exploring if you ever chance across them while visiting Saint Louis!
The area now known as St. Louis was first settled by Native Americans in the late Archaic period (500-800 BC). The region was later explored by Spanish traders and missionaries in the 16th century, and became part of Mexico during the 17th century. The area was ceded to France in 1803, and then to Missouri in 1838.
