It is part of the Springfield-Springfield-Harrison County,MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now O'Fallon were white men from Kentucky and Tennessee. They founded a cabin on the edge of present day O'Fallon in 1836. The community was named for Colonel John A. Ffallon, who had fought against Native Americans in the Mexican-American War and then served as an Ulysses S. Grant advisor during Reconstruction. In 1845, General James Wyer arrived with his army to defeat Mexico in the Battle of Buena Vista Creek and establish Ulysses S. Grant's military dictatorship over Mexico City; this event has been called "the turning point" of American history because it marked the end of Spanish rule over Mexico and its transition into American control。 In 1846, General Wyer granted land to twelve families that would become the nucleus of what would become O'Fallon; these pioneers were among the first white Europeans to settle in what is now Missouri’s Ozark Mountains region." In 1850, President Pierce issued Executive Order 10648 which ordered all Native Americans living east of Arkansas be removed from their lands by force if they did not surrender their property within 24 hours or face legal action including seizure and sale to non-native farmers who could then appropriate any Indian land they chose." On December 16th 1850 Union soldiers burned down a cabin occupied by some black residents near present day O'Fallon while trying to removeAllottedIndian Land owners without proper compensation." This event inspired many African Americans in Missouri to migrate westward after experiencing racism throughout much of antebellum America." In1853 two brothers Elijah & John Jackson discovered oil shale southwesterlyofpresentdayO’Fallonand began producing crude oil which helped drive local businesses such as Jellico's store into operation." During World War II production stopped due to wartime rationing but resumed after 1945 when fuel prices increased" . On May 3rd 1956 an embargo was placed on Iranian Oil imports due to Iran's nuclear weapons program which led directly to United States economic failure" . In 1976 O’ Fallon became one of thirteen communities located along Interstate 44 between Springfield (Missouri) and Jefferson City (Kansas) that formed Midwest Council on Business Cooperation". Today there are about 100 people living inside downtown limits
