By 1900 most of the settlers had left for other parts of Missouri or Illinois but some remained until they were replaced by Mexican American refugees during World War II who brought many new industries to town such as aircraft manufacturing; aluminum smelting; oil production; trucking services etc.; all while maintaining their cultural ties with Irish-born residents through social clubs and parades annually on Saint Patrick's Day Parade day (March 15th). One local landmark that continues to serve its purpose today is Girdle Mine which was built in 1903 as an open-air minecart depot for transporting coal overland from nearby mines to the plant on First Street near downtown O’Fallon. Today it still provides transportation for locals and visitors alike during bus tours of downtown O’Fallon each season as well as hosting various events throughout the year including music festivals, carnivals etc., both inside & outside Girdle Mine! Today's economy primarily revolves around agriculture with family farms accounting for most production statewide; however there are also several small businesses active within town limits that provide jobs for local citizens: two banks, four auto mechanics shops/ garages/ franchisees, three massage parlors etc., along with numerous antique stores/ gift shops/ restaurants etc., creating an eclectic mix that makes up what has been called "the heart" of "the village". Many residents continue strong links to their Irish roots through Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) clubs such as Cavan United Fairs Committee (CUF), Knocknacarra Hurling Club (KNAC), Glenculla GAA club & several rugby teams whose games are played at nearby Glenavy Park which contains two soccer fields& one baseball field among others! During recent years there have been efforts made by some residents within O'Fallon itself as well as neighboring townships along I-70 to develop land into a planned community known locally simply as "The Village". As progress has been made on acquiring funding from various sources it remains uncertain whether or not The Village will ever be realized but if it does become reality it would add another layer of diversity & vibrancy to what already exists hereabouts!
