The pistol consisted of a heavy barrel with a single-shot action that required one hand to operate. In 1829, George Stephenson founded his own firearms company in O'Fallon which became known as Stephenson & Company Firearms Manufacturing Company. In 1834, Stephenson partnered with Michael Collins who became president of Stephenson & Company Firearms Manufacturing Company. That same year, Stephenson retired from his position as president andCollins took over leadership of the company until his death in 1861. In 1841, Ira Dorenberger joined Stephenson & Company Firearms Manufacturing Company along with his brother Hiram Dorenberger Jr.. The brothers began producing revolvers under their own name until 1850 when they merged into Dorenberger Brothers Arms Corporation which continued production until 1865 when it merged into Colt Arms Corporation). During this time period, revolver production increased significantly due to demand from military personnel and law enforcement agencies across America.
