In 1864, Colonel Nathaniel Bedford purchased land east of present day O'Fallonvillage for $10 per acre. He named his new community "Bedfordburg." The first store opened in 1865 and it became one of the most successful businesses in town. One resident recalled that "the store sold everything from candy to flour to pork." The opening of Union Pacific Railroad brought industry to O'Fallon through its connection with Springfield; however, by 1870 cotton production had declined and Bedford abandoned the community due to lack of money to continue developing it. The next decade saw many changes for O' Fallon: during Reconstruction period black residents were integrated into white society; they bought homes near Willard Elementary School while white residents built larger houses closer to downtown; floods destroyed many homes between 1875 and 1886 which led to economic decline until being repaired and rebuilt during prohibition era when businesses resumed.; finally during World War II large amounts of munitions were produced at nearby Post-Tribune Works including B-24 Liberator bombers used over Europe

The population of O’Fallon decreased from its peak in 1930 to its lowpoint in 1990 due to various factors such as Agrarian Adjustment programs, Wade–Davis Act disapproval of cotton farming in Arkansas following World War II, changes in technology that impacted many industries within Missouri such as transportation and telecommunications, and other economic indicators throughout the country during this time period
