O'Fallon, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census and has grown steadily over the years, reaching 2,052 as of the 2016 census. O'Fallon is named for Colonel John O'Farrell (1786-1853), an officer in the United States Army who fought in the Mexican-American War and who later served as governor of Missouri. The first permanent settler in what is now O'Fallon was James McDonnell (1792-1854). McDonnell built a cabin on a knoll overlooking the main street in 1847. He named his settlement after General Arthur St. Clair's brigade that had attacked Mexico City during the Mexican-American War. The town grew rapidly, thanks to both its strategic location and its cheap land prices. By 1850, there were about 25 people living in O’Fallon. In 1856, James Wirtz bought 640 acres of land near present day Midland Avenue and Old National Road from Nicholas Biddle Jr., one of St Louis County's wealthiest men. With this new land, Wirtz became one of the most powerful men in early Ozark society. Wirtz also developed what are now downtown O’ Fallon and parts of Midland Avenue east of Interstate 44 into what is today one ofMissouri's most vibrant cities with more than 3 million residents within its limits! Wirtz died childless in 1870 and bequeathed his entire estate to Central High School which opened for instruction on September 15th 1870 under auspicesof Governor Prentiss "Pete" Beauregard! This act helped spur development around Central High School; including construction of two churches (St Josephs Episcopal Church & Second Presbyterian Church) a barn/smithy/garden complex (later known as Bruce Arena Drive), four elementary schools - Union School (now part Of Douglas County Schools), West Side Elementary School & Parkview Middle SCHOOL - along with numerous other businesses including three grocery stores(Jenny Litton's Store; Harry Smith Grocery Company; Peet's grocery store) hardware store(Harrison Hardware Co.), insurance company(National Life Insurance Co.), social club(First Methodist Episcopal Church), post office(& telephone exchange), etc.; making it one of largest townsspeople centerin Miscellany County before Famine hit! In 1907 Central HighSchool moved from its original location on Bruce Arena Drive to new facilities adjacent to Veterans Memorial Stadium….the first high school west of Illinois! A large fire destroyed portionsofthecentralhighschool building on October 6th 1913 but due to quick response by local firefighters all students& staff were evacuated safely without lossoftime! Many football games were played at CentralHighSchool between 1914-'15and1920-'21beforethe school moved again……..to state Farm Field where it stayed until 1965 when it moved back toCentralHighSchool!!
