In 1896–97 an oil well were drilled here that yielded large quantities of oil which led to increased development around the town center; this area now includes most of downtown O'Fallon proper along with several smaller neighborhoods within walking distance of each other including North Park amphitheater (north side) - one block east of the courthouse square - University Avenue south between Fourth Street & Seventh Street - Midtown shopping district (south side) - Pioneer Square east between Eighth & Ninth Streets - Young America Theater north side just past Interstate 40 exit ramp
