Lee Summit is a city in Barton County, Missouri, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Lee Summit is named for General Winfield Scott Lee (1802-1865), an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War and a member of the Confederate States Congress from Virginia. The town was platted on March 3, 1881 by J.C. Lea and Prentice Kieft, two brothers who had founded a transportation company in Nauvoo, Illinois. They named their new town for General Scott Lee because he had been one of their earliest customers and suppliers. The first post office opened in May 1881; it was called "Nauvoo." When the railroad came through town on its way to Topeka, Kansas, they built a depot at what is now First National Bank Park and named it "Lee Summit." As businesses grew in Lee Summit, people requested that they be renamed after other civil war veterans or local politicians who had contributed to the community's development. On December 15, 1886, residents voted 5-to-1 to rename their town "Lee" after General Winfield Scott Lee. The name stuck and has been used ever since by locals and newcomers alike. In 1907–08 there were several fires which burned through much of downtown Lee Summit; however no damage resulted from these fires as most buildings were wooden frame structures at that time and only suffered smoke damage from burning coal night lamps instead of fireballs like more recent times when oil lanterns have become common symbols for downtown firefighting operations due to concerns about possible looting during large disasters such as Katrina or Sandy On July 4th 1908 there was another major fire which destroyed much of downtown government building but this fire also did not cause any damage as all but one window of City Hall went up in flames leaving only charred rubble remaining today In 1968 when Interstate435 became I-70 IKF began construction over what would have been downtown LCM developments including those east of I-435 near current day Girard Avenue with plans to build numerous high rise hotels etc., many citizens opposed this development fearing it would DESTROY significant sections OF THEIR CITY THIS WAS AN EFFECTIVE MOTION TO OBJECTIVELY END THE DRAGWAY DRIVING IN AND OUT OF THE CITY CENTER

The town's growth paralleled that of Missouri itself, reaching its peak around 1880. By then, Lee's Summit had a population of over 10,000 people. The town experienced some major setbacks during the early years of World War I. On July 1st 1914, German forces attacked the town and burned down most of it. This attack left many residents homeless and unemployed. However, the town recovered quickly and resumed its growth afterwards. In 1949, a fire destroyed most of downtown Lee's Summit; however, it was quickly rebuilt with help from local businesses and citizens. Today, Lee’s Summit is one of Mo’s fastest growing communities – making it an ideal place to raise children – and is known for its diverse cultural attractions such as galleries and theaters
