In 1861, Lee's Summit became part of Confederate Missouri during the American Civil War because it sympathized with the Confederacy. After the war ended, Union soldiers burned down most of the businesses in Lee's Summit to Clear Creek Cemetery where their families were buried along with many other Confederate dead on December 12th 1865. Since then, much of what once constituted Lee's Summit has been demolished or redesigned including its original white frame depot that now stands vacant next to an agricultural complex and a football field used by nearby Ball State University since 1951 until 2007 when it was replaced by a new stadium which houses both Ball State football and soccer games as well as concerts and events throughout the year
