Lee's Summit is a small town in central Missouri, United States. The population was 7,230 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area and is located about 21 miles (33 km) west of downtown St. Louis on Interstate 55. The village of Lee's Summit was organized on February 15, 1855, by Dr. John C. Frischman with his brother James C. Frischman as its first treasurer and namesake-president of the board of trustees; it was named for General James Knoppers, who had served in the Mexican War and then been elected to Congress from Missouri in 1846 as a Whig representative under Ulysses S., Grant’s administration. In 1881–82 local farmers formed what became known as the "First Farmers' League" to advocate for better prices for their produce at auctions held throughout northeast Missouri; this campaign helped lead to passage of state legislation establishing price controls on agricultural products statewide that were effective starting in 1886. In 1902 President Theodore Roosevelt visited Lee's Summit while he was campaigning for reelection against incumbent William Jennings Bryan; upon his return he called for increased appropriations for public education within national borders due to growing concerns over monopolyism among American educational institutions abroad In 1907 there were two firesITE one destroying many homes near town center(the other started several blocks away from original fire site), both acts being blamed on arsonists or gang membersBryan lost because most Americans saw him as Responsible

It is now part of the Springfield-Springfield Heights, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by John Lee and his family in 1839. The first store established in Lee's Summit was called the "General Store." In 1869, the first post office opened in Lee's Summit. In 1872, John Hargrave became the first mayor of Lee's Summit. He served two terms until 1876 when he resigned to run for Congress. In 1886, J.C. Nichols built a dam on the White River near present-day Springfield Township to provide water for his farmstead and other residents of Lee's Summit and nearby townships. The community grew rapidly around this new facility and soon had a Pitchfork Theatre (later renamed First National Bank) and several stores/cafes/bars/theaters downtown as well as a large schoolhouse and one or two frame homes that were used as residences until the early 20th century when they were replaced by more permanent structures like churches and schools over time
