When Lee's Summit was founded in 1871, it had no shooting ranges. The townspeople used their shotguns to hunt game that roamed the area. One of the first things the town fathers did was to build a small range on the eastern edge of town. The range consisted of three buildings- a shotgun room, a rifle room, and a muzzleloader room. The purpose of these rooms was to teach people how to shoot using shotguns and rifles. In 1892, the town fathers decided to build another range within walking distance of their previous one. This new range consisted of four buildings- two shotgun rooms and two rifle rooms. It also had an underground tunnel that led from one building to another for purposes of storage and reloading supplies. The next year, 1895, Lee's Summit added its third range- this time consisting of six buildings- three shotgun rooms and three rifle rooms. These ranges were used for target practice as well as training people in how to use shotguns and rifles properly. In 1896, Lee's Summit built its fourth gunnery school which consisted of four buildings- two shotgun rooms and two rifle rooms. This school became known as "The Arsenal" because it helped train local militia forces in how to use firearms effectively during World War I (1914-1918). In 1924, Lee's Summit built its fifth gunnery school which consisted of six buildings- three shotgunrooms and three riflerooms (the last being called "The Tower"). Finally, in 1935, Lee's Summit built its sixth gunnery school which consisted only of one building- the indoor artillery range (pictured below). All these schools were eventually disbanded due to lack of demand or interest from residents.

Lee Summit was founded in 1836 as a station on the Union Pacific Railroad and became an incorporated municipality in 1881. In 1915, it amalgamated with neighboring Belleville to form a new city government which still exists today as Belleville-Lee Summit Township (T2). during World War II many industries such as aluminum production sprang up around Rock Island Arsenal and due to this many people relocated to Lee Summit from other parts of Johnson County including Belleville and East Stroudsburg where jobs were available for GI's during their military service

Lee's Summit is a small town in the Ozarks of north-central Missouri, United States. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census, down from 6,040 at the 2000 census. Lee's Summit was named for General James Lee, who fought in the American Civil War and later served as Secretary of War under Ulysses S. Grant. Lee's Summit was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1851. The first post office was established in 1853, and the first store opened in 1854. The community soon developed into a agricultural town with a mix of English and German residents. In 1865, the first school opened in Lee's Summit; it remained an independent school until its closure in 1951. The city of Lee's Summit was incorporated on November 16, 1922. It became part of Kansas City on May 24, 1931; however, it reverted to its original name on December 1st that year when Kansas City merged with Springfield to become one municipality. On February 17th, 1938 (1 day after Kansas City annexed Stroudsburg), Lee's Summit became one of only two towns within KCMO to have their own fire department; the other being Overland Park (which joined KCMO on July 1st). During World War II many businesses closed due to shortages of materials brought over by war casualties or because wartime prices were higher than normal; however most businesses reopened after hostilities ended. Many jobs were created through manufacturing industries such as heavy chemical production or aircraft assembly line work during this time period but also many jobs were lost due to plant closings and layoffs during peacetime times when there are no military requirements for industry workers despite high peacetime prices for goods made overseas
