Lee's Summit was founded on November 3, 1837 by General James Hance and his family as a farming community named for Alexander Lee, an American Revolutionary War general who had died in battle three days earlier. The first post office at Lee's Summit was established on December 2, 1837. A post office called Lee's Summit was established in 1838 and remained in operation until it closed on July 14, 1902. The town became a reality when the Kansas Pacific Railroad arrived at its depot on May 6, 1840 and began to carry passengers and freight between Springfield and Leesburg over what is now US Route 20 east of present-day Lee's Summit. In addition to railroad transportation, other important factors leading to growth of earlyLee’sSummit were herds of cattle that were brought into the area from Dodge City by wagon trainloads during the early 1800s and later processed into beef here; Methodists built their first church here in 1847; stone shoes were produced starting around 1850; local mills began production of flour from limestone mined near present day White Settlement; bandstands (later saloons) sprang up throughout the community beginning about 1860; educational opportunities began appearing with an academy being established here about 1865 before becoming absorbed into nearby Maury College; small businesses soon started popping up all over town - including breweries (Brewster Brewing Company opened about 1870), shoe stores (Harris & Taylor Store opened about 1870), grocery stores (Foster’s Grocery store opened about 1870), blacksmith shops (Smokey Joe’s forge open 1861), Barber shop/grocery store (George Aiken & Sons Shoes opens 1862); and chemical plants (Chrysler Chemical Works opens 1863). The population ofLeesSummit rapidly grew after railroads reached it as leather production entered into high gear due to demand from southern slaveowners for new hides that could be used for clothing instead of plantation cotton
Lee's Summit was a town in Montgomery County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. It was founded in 1836 by John Lee and Jesse Ewing as the future town of Lee's Summit. In 1868, it became the county seat of Montgomery County.
