In 1865, Grant moved his army forward along the pipeline that connected Memphis with Springfield so that food could be brought upriver into Illinois rather than being disembarked at Mobile Bay or delivered by sea to Rebel soldiers blockaded along that coast shipyards – an event which helped spark America’s Civil War (see History: American Civil War)). The town began receiving settlers as early as1850 when Methodist Episcopal missionaries came to live here among Native Americans known as Choctaws and Osages. Over time many other denominations followed suit including Baptist Missionary Society missionaries in 1875; Presbyterian Church USA members arrived soon after; Lutheran pastor Wilhelm Kobert arrived in 1895; Methodists founded their own church here in 1903; Catholics came later still but largely ignored until World War II when they started building schools and services around 1948 after US entry into WWI
