Lee's Summit is a town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The community was laid out in 1846 by John Lee, a white settler from Kentucky who had come to the area to plow and cultivate land. He named his new settlement for his father-in-law, James Hogg, an early settler in what is now Illinois. The first post office was established in Lee's Summit on November 15, 1847. In 1861, Confederate General Andrew Johnson reached the town while he was campaigning against Abraham Lincoln in neighboring Missouri; Johnson's forces halted at Lee's Summit while they traveled north to encounter Union forces marching south from Springfield. The local storekeeper and several other citizens were jailed during this time as the war continued elsewhere. In 1865, after Union General Ulysses S Grant defeated Confederate General Robert Easley at Ferguson Bridge near Springfield,[1] Union troops moved into nearby towns such as White City and Blue Island to cleanse them of Confederates following the Battle of Pea Ridge Lakeside Park.[2] On April 12th 1865,[3][4] Union troops burned down the old courthouse located one block east of present day Main Street because it refused to surrender its arsenal rights to army artillery batteries stationed there; this event marks one of only two instances where entire communities were destroyed by military action during the American Civil War[5]. After Reconstruction ended in 1870,[6] many African Americans left or were forced out of their homes due to harshness and discrimination by white mobs throughout Missouri; these events are best represented through stories about "the Great Migration" which began around 1871 when hundreds of freedmen started moving westward across state lines looking for new opportunities.[7][8] In 1875–76[9], construction began on what would become known as "The Plantation",[10][11][12][13][14] a plantation-style home that still stands today adjacent to Main Street (now Olive Boulevard).[15][16] By 1880[17], over 50% of all cotton production occurred within three miles of downtown Lee’s Summit [18];due largely to improved irrigation systems brought about by railroad investments and advancements in agriculture during that decade,[19]:Lee’s Summit became an important center for cotton production until being supplanted by more centralized factories near St. Louis after World War II."[20]:Many residents also developed successful businesses such as grocery stores and insurance companies beginning shortly after World War I.[21]:By 1930 most residents hadigrated away from their small town roots altogether., though some remain active memberships with local organizations including chamber music groups musical festivals etc...
