In 1871, Lee's Summit, Missouri was the first town in the United States to build a school. The town's 1st white teacher was Mrs. Harris. In 1916, Mr. George Weems opened his general store in Lee's Summit and began selling optical equipment including binoculars and telescopes. He also started selling postcards with views of events in the town from his store windows. Lee's Summit is a town in Kansas County, Missouri, United States. The population was 6,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita–Hutchinson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Lee's Summit was James Witherspoon who arrived in 1827. He named his land "Lee's Summit" after General Robert E. Lee, who fought for the Confederacy during the American Civil War and died as a general at Appomattox Court House in 1865. Witherspoon also founded a school and store here. A post office called Newton was established in 1831, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. A sawmill operated here from 1840 to 1850; later mills included one built by David Conkling in 1865 that processed lumber from the surrounding forests. By 1880 there were 12 businesses operating here including five gristmills, three banks, two churches, four schools and two stores. The town had declined by 1890 when many residents left for better times south ofKansas City or because of competition from larger towns north of Kansas City on I-635 (now US-59). However, some movement back into Lee's Summit occurred during World War II when many local farmers produced food for military troops stationed near Wichita Falls, Texas
Lee's Summit was first settled in 1811 by James Robertson and his family. The town was named after General Robert E. Lee, a Confederate general who fought in the Civil War. The town grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s, thanks to the influx of settlers from Illinois. By 1851, Lee's Summit had a population of 2,500 people. The town experienced increasing strife during the 1850s and 1860s due to its location on the border between Kansas and Missouri. In 1868, a fire destroyed much of the town, leaving it forlorn and abandoned. However, local farmers began rebuilding Lee's Summit as a small village with an estimated population of 100 people by 1870. The growth of the village led to increased contention between residents over property rights and traffic issues. In 1886, however,Lee's Summit merged with neighboring Potterville to create the current city of Kansas City.
