After months of public protest and angry demonstrations, Hanchett resigned from office following pressure from business leaders who saw his refusal as bad faith towards them. Lee's Summit experienced another period of growth during World War II; however, due toSkip Barber steel mills opening up across town and competition from other industrial centers around Missouri, it lost its status as an economic powerhouse early on in the war. By 1945, however, industry had begun to decline throughout much of Western Europe due to Allied bombing raids; nevertheless, Americanindustrialists continued to invest money into traditional rural businesses such as agriculture until they too passed away at the end of the century1*. In recent years, there has been a resurgence in interest inLee's Summit history; thanks in part to several documentaries produced about the town and its inhabitants such as "Stories from SpringHill" (2005), "The Life and Times of George Washington Lee" (2008), and "Lee's Summit: A Place Called Home" (2015). Several events have been held recentlyto commemorate various aspects of local history including an annual pancake breakfast fundraiser at Community Park on Sunday morning; a commemoration event for soldiers killed during World War I at Elmwood Cemetery on Saturday evening; and an anniversary celebration for marks on Independence Avenue honoring local veterans who served during World War II on October 4th each year
