In 1871, Lee's Summit was the first town in Missouri to be incorporated. In 1865, General Andrew Johnson took office as the 16th President of the United States and began his term with a goal of creating a strong central government. He ordered Congress to pass an act creating a militia to protect the Union during the American Civil War. This act increased funding for the Union army and helped keep Missouri in the Union. The first gun company in Lee's Summit was organized on May 12, 1871 by Masons under the leadership of George Gillett. The company operated out of a barn on land now known as First Street inLee's Summit. The company used local foundry items to make cannons and rifles. It is said that when Confederate troops came into town, they could find no guns or ammunition so they looted some of the Foundry's property before departing. On October 1, 1871, Lee's Summit became one of 11 towns in Missouri legalized by Governor James Kiefer for gun ownership with certain restrictions placed on it such as not being open to women or those who could not afford firearms. These restrictions were lifted after three months when word spread about this new law throughout Missouri! The first store opened up in Lee's Summit at 814 N Main Street named "Ammunition Exchange". It was run by J H Buchanan & Son which still stands today! Ammunition Exchange sold shotguns, pistols and rifles fromNovember 1870-May 1971! In 1875-1876 two similar stores were organized: A&W Gun Store at 5 South State Street and National Arms Company at 501 South Fourth Street each selling shotguns only! In 1877-1878 another store was organized called "Reilly’s Gun Emporium" located at 417 North Third Street which also served as a post office! It is interesting to note that Reilly’s Gun Emporium closed down before any otheramine did! On November 30th 1880 (the date California became an US state), Wm Blythe opened up his store #2 on Broadway between Second and Third Streets serving pistols only until 1906!!
Lee Summit is a town in Scott County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1848 by settlers from Illinois and named for General James Lee, who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1892 it was renamed for Major General John Fetterman after his death in a horseback riding accident. Lee's Summit became a city on April 1, 1907 following the merger of two nearby towns: Lee and Mount Pleasant. The merged cities had a population of 24,717. On July 16, 2014, Lee's Summit voted to secede from Scott County and become an independent city again under its own name with no affiliation with Springfield or other municipalities within Scott County
