When JSON (Lee's Summit Generation Stage Electricity) came online in 1938, much of central and eastern Phelps County went without power for days because there was no way to get replacement parts from anywhere else! The people of Lee Summit rallied together and got their campaign treasurer to start hawking defective replaced parts door-to-door until they finally got Power Supply Company to come out and provide an emergency generator that lasted all night! In 1941, when World War II began, the military built several airfields within miles of town so that pilots could fly supplies into Germany. One such airfield was RAF Alconbury which housed two Consolidated B-24 Liberators nicknamed "The Twins". On September 15th 1944 these bombers flew over downtown Lee's Summit when they bombed one of RAF Alconbury's radar towers - stunning many who witnessed it! The damage done was considerable; most notably two large windows were smashed in Harrahs casino where locals played blackjack until morning! A few weeks later another Liberator raid took place when three aircraft bombed German oil refineries near Lexington MO while Allied forces were fighting Nazi Germany across Europe! This led directly to Adolf Hitler being forced out of his Reich after six years!! Churchill called this act "the turning point in world history". After WWII ended things slowly returned to normal with businesses opening up and residents growing more settled but never forgetting what Bomber Harris did for us during World War II!!!
