The first school was founded in 1841. In 1851, a Methodist church was built on State Street; it became Lee's Summit Baptist Church in 1925. Lee's Summit experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its proximity to munitions plants and military bases around Kansas City. The population peaked at 27,000 during 1945, but declined rapidly following the war because of demobilization and economic problems caused by postwar reconstruction efforts. Lee's Summit, Missouri is a town located in Jackson County, Missouri, on the eastern bank of the Kansas River. The population was 4,871 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jackson County. The first settler in Lee's Summit was John C. Lee who arrived in 1839. He and his wife Anna founded a farmstead on what is now Main Street and built a log cabin there. In 1840, he married Fannie Yates and they began to sell eggs from their farmstead to local farmers. They also raised hogs and chickens on their property until 1859 when Anna died; John then became sole proprietor of the business. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewing made his way downriver from Springfield to Independence where he met General James Halleck at Council Bluffs for negotiations about joining forces against Abraham Lincoln’s United States Army. When news reached Lee's Station that General Ewing was coming, residents quickly organized themselves into Companies A-K (1st Regiment) of militia to meet him upriver at Smithfield Landing near present-day Emporia (Kansas City). After clashes with Union troops near Smithfield Landing Bridge over the Kansas River, Confederate forces withdrew upstream while Union units burned down buildings along the river’s edge in an effort to flush them out completely. Aftermath: Many people were killed or wounded in skirmishes during this engagement as well as Generals Ewing and Halleck’s subsequent pursuit downstream through central Jackson County which resulted in numerous homes being destroyed or damaged including one house owned by Judge Augustus Purdy which stands today within limits of Parkersburg Historic District adjacent to Lanson Mill Site.). As a result of this battle both sides sustained significant losses with around 50 men dead or gravely injured plus many more militiamen captured or taken prisoner including some who would later serve under Ulysses S Grant during World War I as scouts for cavalry units led by George Armstrong Custer
