Lee's Summit is a town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by General John Fisk and his family in 1834 as a farmstead named Fiskstown on the banks of the Big Blue River. In 1839, it became a stagecoach stop on the Ohio Central Railroad. The town site was platted in 1845 by Captain Neely and Mr. White under the name of Lee's Summit after General James Hays' invasion of Kentucky through that state in 1846 led to increased trade between Great Britain and America along the Illinois Central Railway. In 1865, Lee's Summit residents voted to incorporate as a city under their own charter; this vote followed their defeat by Springfield in an election campaign for mayoralty that year. On December 5, 1865, Lee's Summit became one of sixteen cities in Kansas City metropolitan area when that area was created from parts of three other metropolitan areas: Topeka (Kansas), Independence (Kansas), and Wichita ( Kansas). When KCMO formed its first government on January 1st 1907 with four wards (northwest corner - northeast corner - southcentral corner - southwest corner) it divided into twenty-four precincts which were numbered from one to twenty-four inclusive within each ward number across all sections of KCMO including those portions annexed by KCMO during 1912 consolidation process which resulted in total population increase from 3135 to 4 lodge citizens living therein then becoming single occupancy dwellings with full franchise enjoyed thereby excepting white men who continued to occupy residences located outside wards boundaries while Negroes were confined inside wards boundaries until they could secure property outside wards limits whereupon they vacated residences and took up residence within wards boundaries or leased land out back or built homes thereon eventually becoming self contained negro community thenceforth known as "Lee's Summit"
