Lee's Summit, Missouri is a town in Carbon County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Lee's Summit is the county seat of Carbon County. The first settler in Lee's Summit was Isaac Newton who arrived there in 1814. The town was named after General James K. Polk (1801-1865), then the 25th president of the United States and one of the most powerful men on Earth at that time. General Polk helped organize and lead Ulysses S. Grant's army during the Mexican–American War and his victory at Palo Alto Bridge earned him international fame and made him one of America's most popular presidents with its citizens. In 1837, Captain Nathaniel Lyon built a log cabin near what is now Route 66 to serve as a home for traders coming through Carbon County on their way to St Louis or Independence, Missouri. It was here that he met Jotham Mott, an important figure in early American history who would later become governor of Missouri under General Andrew Johnson (1844-1868). Mott offered Lyon $10 for each wagonload of goods he brought overland from Illinois into Carbondale Township where he located his cabin. Lyon transported some 8 million pounds of freight overland in his four trips between Springfield and Carbondale between 1837 and 1840 alone! He also founded what became known as "the Old World Warehouse" on State Street which still operates today as a small general store serving local residents until recently! Lyon also donated land to build an public square along Illinois Route 66 just south of present day Lee's Summit Elementary School; this area became known as "Lyon Square." In addition to these various philanthropic activities., Captain Lyon also played an influential role in developing much commerce within Carbon County during this period including starting two stores - one called "The Old World Merchant" on Main Street opposite present day Parkview Medical Center while another called "Folsom & Company" soon moved down Market Street into what is now Fenton Care Home before eventually becoming part of First National Bank (now HSBC) across fromLee's Summit High School - both businesses having thrived due to Colonel John Haggard (1792-1866) being instrumental in putting them into operation! whiskey production began operations around this time too – started by Noah Webster – building up what would eventually become Allied Malting Corporation directly next door to Lyon Square! This business activity continued until 1907 when Prohibition laws were passed making whiskey production illegal across America – essentially ending any chance for carbonated beverage sales within Lee’s Summit itself! All these years later we can still enjoy many local microbreweries scattered throughout our community thanks largely to friends like Gabe Carrigan who continues to support us financially while living outside THE CITY LIMITS!!!
