Lee's Summit is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,893 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area and is bordered by Lee's Summit Township to the south, Linnwood to the east, Independence to the north, and West Plains to the west. The town was platted in 1851 by James Prentice and others as a post office on land bought from Jesse Chappel. A store and hotel were built in 1853; both are now gone but their remnants can still be seen along Main Street. The first school in Lee's Summit was built in 1854 and opened for instruction in December of that year. Lee's Summit became a city on April 1, 1907 when it annexed neighboring Independenceville. Hardware Company, Countrywide Home Loans Inc., Best Buy Co., Michaels Stores Inc., Kroger Co., Occidental Petroleum Corporation Lee's Summit is also home to several parks such as Highland Park Lake Park located just outside of town on Highway 61 next to Highland Park Golf Course and Maple Woods Cemetery located off Ulysses Road near Interstate 670 Exit 15A

The town was founded by Reuben Chapman in 1838 and named for General Edmund P. Lee, who fought in the Mexican–American War and later served as governor of Missouri. Lee's Summit was organized as a village on April 15, 1847, by David Sibley and others from nearby Carthage Heights. It became an incorporated town on July 14, 1868. Lee's Summit has been home to several businesses including Northwestern Steel Company (now JBS) and Union Carbide Corporation since its incorporation; both now have manufacturing plants outside the town limits. The township also boasted one of America's first post office buildings built in 1908-09; it closed in 2001 but reopened as an antique shop and museum called "Old Post Office Park". In recent years, Lee's Summit has seen increasing development with new homes being built along Interstate 25 as well as businesses opening up within walking distance of many residents' homes. In 2007-2008, Lee’s Summit was selected to be one of five finalists for the Missouri Business Development Program’s “Town of Innovation Award” which rewards towns that are working hard to change or improve their economy through innovation programs such as this one .
