By 1870, population had grown to over 1,500 residents and the mill remained operational until it was destroyed by fire in 1925. During World War II (1939-1945), many industries were relocated to nearby Kansas City due to wartime shortages of materials such as lumber and steel. Many jobs were lost during this time period because of automation technology which made production more efficient than previous methods
