Lee's Summit, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks region of southwest Missouri. The population was 613 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–Farmington, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now includes Lee's Summit was first settled by Scottish settlers in 1814. It became a trading post on the Santa Fe Trail and prospered until 1836, when it was burned by United States troops during the Mexican-American War. After Mexico lost its independence from Spain in 1821, Texas claimed most of Mexico for itself and began to annex land around what is now Lee's Summit. In 1838, Kansas Territory was organized and Presiding Judge James K. Polk appointed George Post as its first Territorial Governor. On October 14, 1840, Post issued an order proclaiming Lee's Summit a new county seat of Douglas County, Kansas Territory. In 1861, after the American Civil War began, Union forces drove Confederate forces out of Kansas and into Missouri; then they moved on to neighboring Arkansas before ending up near Springfield in 1865. By this time much of Douglas County had been annexed into new counties: Osage County (1865), Johnson County (1866), Crawford County (1867), Newton County (1868), and finally Sumner County (1869). WhenDouglas Countys merged with other counties to form present-day Missouri in 1870, Lee's Summit remained within Sumner County because it had been reclassified as part of that county following its merger with Johnson and Crawford Counties Lee's Summit experienced rapid growth following World War II as millions arrived from war-torn Europe seeking jobs in agriculture or manufacturing; many residents were educated professionals who returned home to start their own families. The local economy declined during the mid-20th century due to technological innovation leading to declines in rural employment and suburban development; however there has been recent redevelopment including several high-rise apartments developments along I-435 south of town . Today Lee's Summit remains one of the most vibrant small towns in America

In Lee's Summit, Missouri, on July 16th, 1871, a group of men led by Captain Samuel J. Tilton disembarked from the USS Constitution in order to form the first Mormon Battalion and fight for Utah Territory against the United States government. The battalion numbered only 36 men but it was an important event in Latter Day Saint history because it signaled their intention to move away from Salt Lake City and establish their own independent kingdom in what is now Utah. The Mormons had arrived in Lee's Summit about two years earlier and begun construction of a temple that would become one of the most iconic symbols of their faith. When war broke out with Mexico in 1867, many Mormons chose to enlist in the army instead of risking their lives on the battlefield. However, when Villa enteredUtah Territory as its new governor on April 12th, 1869, tensions began to mount between the Mormons and non-Mormons. This situation came to a head when Tilton organized a militia unit known as "The Independent Boys" in order to protect LDS property from vandalism or attack by Mexican civilian claimants. On May 15th, 1870, members of The Independent Boys mounted an assault on a Mexican settlement at San Dimas which resulted in six people dead and 27 injuries; this event is considered one of the deadliest massacres conducted by Mormon troops during the war. On July 16th 1871, after weeks of planning and rehearsing under intense military pressure (the fortieth anniversary of Brigham Young's comingto America), Captain Samuel J. Tilton led his Mormon Battalion into battle against Major General Winfield Scott Hancock's Union forces at nearby Ford County Battlefield near present-day Independence Heights. outnumbered three times over (estimated muster size at just 36 men), Tilton's battalion fought gallantly but was eventually overwhelmed by superior numbers and suffered heavy losses including 10 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded along with Captains John Arents (5 killed) and David Waddell (2 killed). Aftermath show that there were no major skirmishes or battles occurred within Utah Territory following this particular engagement; however some historians believe that Hancock may have been forced to retreat due to these events which helped solidify LDS control over much of eastern Utah following The Civil War
