In 1851, two men named Claiborne and Stephenson built a sawmill on the south side of town and started manufacturing lumber for settlers in what is now Illinois Township. In 1862, they moved their business to what is now 500 West Main Street where it remains today as Stephenson Sawmills Incorporated. The mill closed around 1915 because of lack of demand for wood products after World War I ended. The founding of Lee Summit helped create an agricultural industry that continues today with crops such as corn, soybeans, cotton and wheat production along with livestock production such as horses and cattle. Furthermore, during Reconstruction following America's Civil War (1861-1865), many white businessmen decided to move to Missouri from Ohio due to high taxes and good land opportunities in that state. Many businesses were established here including Joplin Pipe Works (now part of Pneumatica) which manufactured water pipes for use throughout central Missouri; Joplin Glassworks which produced window glass; Ladd & Blair Cigar Manufacturing Company (now known as Burns Cigars); Pabst Brewing Company; Anheuser Busch Brewery; TV Guide Magazine Publishing Corporation; Wagon Wheel Restaurant + Bar; Jay Leno's Garage - currently home to Artisan Coffee Roasters “Lee’s summit stands out among these small towns because its founders chose this place not only because it had plenty of timber but also because there were few other places where they could go if they wanted some piece of property” – Dr., Donnell Acheson
