Lee's Summit is a small town in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Lee's Summit was laid out in 1853 by General James Wilkinson and named for his family's home near the junction of the two rivers that flow through it – the Leesburg and Manchester Rivers. The town made its first appearance on maps in 1854 when its namesake, General James Wilkinson, surveyed an area which would become Lee's Summit. In 1865, after Union forces had destroyed most of Missouri during the American Civil War, General Wilkinson returned to live in Lee's Summit and continued to be involved with local politics there until his death in 1876. The first store opened on Main Street in 1865. At that time farming was the primary occupation of many residents; however, within a few years manufacturing began to take hold as well due to railroad construction nearby. Manufacturing included tanning and saddling businesses as well as various items needed for farm work such as flour, bacon, cheese and tobacco products. In 1870–71 factory production reached $1 million annually thanks to new technologies like electric lights and refrigeration; this growth helped drive a small but significant landowning class into prominence throughout much of Midwestern society during this period In 1879–80 John Bemis organized what became known as "The Great Northern Railroad Strike" resulting in increased wages and benefits for workers along the line; this event helped spur other industrial activity within Lee’s Summit including soap making (the first successful commercial endeavor done using lye), brewing (the creation of beer using limestone mined from nearby hills) and meatpacking (the founding of what is now Armour Foods). With these new industries came new social changes too: women gained professional jobs outside the home while men increasingly worked long hours at those same factories; families started splitting up as one man led two or more families into wage-earning jobs inside factories while their wives stayed behind with children or served additional domestic responsibilities Many people associated with Lee’s Summit during this time have gone onto illustrious careers both statewide and nationally: Drury Brothers insurance agents from relocated here after World War II banded together to form their own company which continues today; members of Congress such as Jay Rockefeller (D-MO) have been natives or residents since before they were elected office Although continuing economic success has been elusive over recent decades, there are several initiatives underway locally/ nationally that could lead to resurgence including plans by Mayor Gary Locke to create a daycare center downtown which will support local economy directly while also providing educational opportunities for kids living below poverty lines
