In 1881, George Lee and his brother-in-law William Wirtz founded the Winchester Repeating Arms Company in Leesburg, Virginia. The company’s first product was a shotgun called the Winchester Model 1887. It became one of the most popular shotguns in America and retailing for $5 per unit. In 1886, Winchester began producing rifles under their own name as well. These rifles were known for their accuracy and durability. The rifle became known as the Winchester Model 1886. This rifle was designed by Andrew Fenton and produced from 1886 to 1888. It featured a 23 inch barrel that allowed it to shoot distances up to 100 yards without problem. In 1889, another company named H&R (later Remington) entered into partnership with Winchester to produce rifles under their own name as well as shotguns and handgunsunder license from Winchester. This partnership would last until 1899 when both companies separated themselves once again. In 1892, another company named Browning introduced a new shotgun design which they christened the Browning Crossfire Shotgun model 1892A1 (BX or AE). This shotgun was incredibly successful and quickly replaced all other shotguns on American market at that time due its reliable performance and affordable price tag. Around this same time period, George Lee also started manufacturing pistols in Leesburg using his father’s old revolver design called the Colt Pistol model 1880. He continued this tradition until 1908 when he handed over production of these pistols to his son-in-law Harry Patterson who then continued it until 1911 when it was discontinued entirely.
