The town was founded by Methodist ministers in 1871 as a farm and trading post on the western edge of what is now Jackson County. It grew rapidly due to its position near the Kansas state line and its easy access to both railroads and roads. In 1907, Lee's Summit became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and five trustees. In 1967, when Jackson County merged with St Joseph County to form Kansansburg Township, Lee's Summit became part of that township. In 2000, it reverted back to its original name when Kansansburg Township merged with Liberty Township to form Liberty City Township; however, it remains registered as "Lee's Summit" with the Missouri Department of State for historical purposes. Lee's Summit is located at (38.512710,-96.689590). According to the 2010 census, it has a total area of , all land. The Raccoon River forms the town's eastern border and US-Route 66 forms its southern border

Powder-priming involves adding a volatile propellant (such as potassium nitrate) to an already hot cartridge case before firing it. Wet fire occurs when ammo is loaded into a gun and fired immediately after being primed with powder. When this happens, air pressure inside the gun forces the primer onto the round that will be shot later on. Once fired it recondenses and starts burning again which causes gas escape from the round which then produces sparks that light up your eye while you shoot! The first post office was established in 1861 and the first store opened in 1865. After the Union victory at Gettysburg in 1863, Lee's Summit became a Confederate stronghold and its residents fought against the Union throughout the war. In 1865, following the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, most of Lee's Summit reverted to civilian control and it has since been an agricultural community with a population of about 7500 people today. The town began as a cattle ranching community on the edge of what is now Kansas City suburb Overland Park; by 1870 it had developed into a small farming town with three stores and twenty-five homes. In 1876, while still growing slowly, Lee's Summit joined Kansas City as an incorporated municipality with a full range of local government functions: fire protection, public works (roads), police force, public education (through high school),and other services not currently provided by city governments elsewhere within KCMO limits or by Kansas City itself. That same year sawLee's Summit become one of only two towns within KSMO to host their own baseball championship game – along with Topeka – when their new home field at Memorial Stadium was completed after years of planning and construction.. In 1907 portions of central Kansas were annexed into KSMO making Lee's Summit part again – but this time annexation meant incorporation into KSMO’s largest city Limits area including all but topographically flat north side suburbs like Shawnee Mission Hills that lay immediately south/southwest from downtown KCMO boundaries then stretched eastward to meet up with Butler county line just northeast of Independence Mall; annexations like this effectively doubled KCMO’s size both geographically and demographically making Lee’s Summit one big city center for all northwest MO suburbs outside KCMO limits which had previously been single-town villages or even “boroughs”…. In 1961 when KMOV first television station moved from Topeka to Independence Mall creatingKCMO’s second commercial TV market place KMOV-TV would be headquartered there until 1985 when they moved back to Topeka….. During prohibition era some businesses such as moonshine distilleries did exist but these have long gone away because drinking age increased after prohibition ended
Lee's Summit was a small town in Illinois until the early 1800s when it became the home of General James K. Polk and his wife Lucy. The town was laid out by Captain John P. Lees in 1802, after he surveyed the area for the new United States government. The first school in Lee's Summit was built on what is now Main Street in 1807. There were no roads or schools in this area until after the American Civil War, when a road was built between Lee's Summit and Independence, Missouri.
