O'Fallon, Illinois is a small town located in Will County, Illinois. The population was 9,872 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. O'Fallon was laid out in 1841 and named for Colonel Michael Ffallon, an Irish immigrant who owned land on the east side of the stream that now forms O'Fallon Creek. The first settler in what is now O'Fallon was Michael Hickey, who arrived there in 1841. He built his home on a knoll overlooking the creek and began plowing and cultivating land. By 1847, Hickey had five children and he and his wife developed a dairy operation which prospered until around 1865 when production stopped because of poor weather conditions. In 1896, John Phelan bought some of Hickey's land which included his former home where he lived until his death in 1957. From 1895 to 1897, Phelan ran a grocery store at 114th Street and State Road 3 (now State Road 62). About 1925-1926 Harry Ahern operated a hardware store at 318 N Main Street which became an insurance agency about 1940 before it closed its doors due to fire damage; it reopened as an antique shop about 1978 In 1886 Mayor William Wirtz established the first public school in what is now O’Fallon Township with six students attending grades one through four on account of transportation difficulties caused by winding roads leading thereto from rural areas across county lines into town proper In 1893 James Laughlin purchased two lots adjoining Lt Col Ffallons old farmstead northwest of town site from Capt Thomas Dooley for $2 per acre – this lot eventually became Block 10 within present day O’Fallon Township limits In 1907 Mrs Jane Goodrich donated sixty acres encompassing present day portions of Center Township to be used as “Agrarian Home Park” for various benevolent purposes including support for education hereabouts . Mrs Goodrich died suddenly unmarried young widow thereof shortly after donation . Park plat not filed until 1915 . There were no residents living therein until 1916 when coal mine disaster destroyed much or all village center properties herein ( Block 2 ) ……………….. so completely unoccupied & abandoned during World War I (& following) that little if any evidence remains except memory only O’ Fallons early history can be gleaned through oral traditions passed down by generations of locals as well as research done upon request by local historians over several decades ago……….. Oral histories have been collected primarily by Revd Dr Bill Steele owner/operator R-L-K Studley Chiropractic clinic since 1984 thru 2016………………………………………. recollections allow us insight into daily life back then among before & after WWI boomtownsfolk: "Back then there wasn't really anything here – just woods up top" "When you got married you had to go get your license & leave" "No matter how many times you changed your name it would always come back to Michael [Hickey] so we called him Mikey." recalled one resident whose husband served overseas during WWII: "He [Michael] came back from World War II…and we started having kids again pretty much right away." He continued: "…he didn't like going outside without a hat or jacket on because there was always cold weather." One woman recounted her parents leaving their home during prohibition because they couldnt afford tequila: "…They couldn't keep liquor coming up so they sold everything they had and moved out west." Another said she never saw her father drink alcohol but she did see him buy lottery tickets: "…My dad liked playing theLottery sometimes – he would buy $5 worth of tickets just so he could play them safe." She went on to say that her father sometimes won big money but most times he lost everything.: "After prohibition my mom stopped buying lottery tickets too – she thought it was nuts that our dad could spend that kind of money.'"
