O'Fallon is named after Michael O'Farrell, who served as the assessor and founder of what is now the City of Chicago. The first people to live in what is now O'Fallon were farmers who came from Ireland around 1800. They grew corn and wheat and built homes on a bluff overlooking their land. In 1853, Michael O’Farrell founded the village of O'Fallon with his family as its first residents. From this small town grew one of America's most important cities -Chicago.
The Town of O'Fallon was organized on April 12, 1847. The town was named for General John Fenton, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as a U.S. Senator from Illinois. O'Fallon's first store and post office were built in 1848. In 1854, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad arrived in the town, which helped to spur economic development. In 1865, O'Fallon became a seat of government for Cook County. In 1888, the City of Chicago annexed part of O'Fallon and renamed it West Side Village
