The name comes from "ó Fallsa" or "the falls". At its peak in 1920, O'Fallon had a population of 755 residents. Today it has a population of 1,323 people and is considered an agricultural center with more than 50 businesses including four banks and two tractor dealerships. O'Fallon's history goes back to 1892 when Irish Americans from Claremorris settled in what is now O'Fallon Village on the west side of Kane County. They named their settlement after their parish (town) in Ireland - Falaighanacht (Faliaheenach). In 1907 they incorporated as a village and changed its name to O’Fallon Township in honor of General Jonathan Mathers who had been military governor during the American Civil War. General Mathers had come to America as part of President George Washington's army and was killed at Monmouth Court House on July 4th, 1775 while leading an attack against British forces near Princeton Junction,. Prospectors discovered gold near this site in 1851 but no one wanted to touch it because there were too many wild animals living there! A man named John Grimes prospected for years before he announced his find on October 15th, 1863: “I found $10 worth of gold veins just east of this point where we are now camped; I will take video camera down and show you all . . . This place will soon be developed into an entire city!” The first post office opened here on October 24th, 1865 under the name “Grimesville” but it moved several times until it finally closed on December 10th, 1903 due to high taxes which Congressman Adam Jaffe introduced as part of his campaign for state legislator against incumbent James Fenton…In 1912 Champion Glass Works started production at this location making window glass which quickly became popular throughout America due to its durability and light color – such windows remain today commonplace throughout most major U S cities! Today O’Fallon rests mostly within rural boundaries with only a few blocks being adjacent to urban areas like Cook IL., Oak Brook IL., South Elgin IL., Bloomington IL., Chicago Heights IL., Tinley Park IL., Schaumburg Il./northwest suburban CookIL.) Within thaturban boundary however some large buildings can be seen scattered around Town Center including KFC World Headquarters building (2006), General Motors Building (1920), Applebee's restaurant (1948), Ford dealership (1973) among others According to 2016 US Census data over half the population lives below poverty line with nearly 60% living below 100% federal poverty level according as well as over 40% living below 50% federal poverty line making Illinois one of the worst states for low-income families according to both HUD & USDA reports

On October 6, 1867, the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill authorizing the creation of a new city in O'Fallon Township. The new city was named after General Ulysses S. Grant, who had served as the President of the United States during the American Civil War and as Governor of Illinois. The first residents of the new city were sworn in on November 1, 1867.
