The town is named after General Michael Foy who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as Governor of California.Foy's home, built on land donated by his wife Margaret, still stands today and is used as a museum. In 1881, O’Fallon became known as the "Downtown City" following its incorporation as a village. In 1934, it became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and city council system.The history of O'Fallon stretches back to 1836 when Irish immigrants arrived in search of land to settle in America. They first settled in what is now known as O’Fallon Township but moved to what is now core Village territory before settling permanently here in 1838. The name “O” came from Captain Nicholas Owen who had petitioned for permission to establish a farmstead here on land donated by James Hickey Sr., one of Ireland’s most famous landowners at the time (and father-in-law to Daniel Webster).Captain Owen set up shop hereabouts until 1840 when he sold his holdings to John Dooley for $2,500 cash plus horses and oxen which he transported across country to sell at right prices at points eastward along the Great Lakes watershed (today part of Indiana) - thus helping lay the foundation for what would become modern day Chicago!In 1845 Patrick Walsh purchased some additional acreage from Captain Owen near present day Kankakee Heights Boulevard and laid out what would eventually become Vail Street into two wide streets parallel to each other about two thirds their length - one leading east and one leading west - soon afterwards called Main Street or simply “the Road” because all goods carried off its route were unloaded onto it during those early days! By 1850 there were over 200 residents living here – many owning their own homes – all bustling with activity contributing importantly both materially & emotionally towards building this beautiful community we know today! This period also saw progress being made on several important fronts including: creating charter schools; establishing churches & gravesites; erecting bridges etc…. Over time these various efforts culminated with incorporation into our Town Council System effective February 3rd 1935!Today’s core Village territory includes much older areas such as Northfield which dates back over 350 years including periods under British rule (1771 thru 1800), French rule (1803 thru 1865), Nagle County under US jurisdiction (1868 thru 1890), Sears Mill District under Modem Dowling Administration (1912 thru 1925), then becoming part of downtown Chicago through annexation resulting from change in political alignment within that area…..Today we have an active Downtown Area full Of People Who Want To Connect With Each Other And Make A Difference For Our Community….
O'Fallon was founded in 1847, and became a city in 1881. The population of O'Fallon was over 100,000 by 1920. In the 1930s, O'Fallon was hit with the Great Depression, and its economy went into decline. However, the city did manage to survive as a manufacturing town until the early 1960s when it lost its textile industry to Mexico City.
