O'Fallon is a small city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,824 at the 2010 census. O'Fallon is the tenth-most populous city in Illinois. The city is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and has a population of over 25 million people. The first European settlers in what is now O'Fallon were Frenchmen who arrived in 1777 and named it La Salle after Saint-Lambert, bishop of Paris. In 1813, the United States acquired land east of the Mississippi River as part of the Missouri Compromise and renamed it Illinois Territory. On November 1, 1815, General James K. Polk announced that he had purchased 3 million acres (14 km²) from Joseph Iacobini for $10 per acre (4 m²). The new territory included all of Lake County except for a small portion around O'Fallon which was given to Gideon Welles to develop as his plantation farm known as Wellesley Station on October 6, 1816. On February 14, 1819, Indiana Territory was organized out of portions of both Illinois Territory and Missouri Territory when a treaty was ratified between Ulysses S. Grant and Stephen A.
