O'Fallon's history dates back to 1834 when it was named for Colonel John O'Farrell, who had come from Ireland as part of the American Expedition to explore the Northwest Territory. O'Farrell's home still stands on Tenth Street and Elmwood Avenue in central O'Fallon. Other early settlers included James Fenton and his family who established a mill on the banks of the Sangamon River in 1836; Cornelius Hennigan arrived in 1840 and founded an grocery store on Commercial Street; and Jacob Riis arrived in 1846 and began operations with a gristmill on Ottawa Road. The first school in what is now O’Fallon was organized by Reverend John Mapes (1792-1860) on December 3, 1834. A small log cabin served as its first building until 1840 when a larger frame structure was erected which served as the schoolhouse until 1860 When Knoppers Academy opened it became one of three public schools serving Kane County In 1853 Rev. Wm Crain started a Sunday school which continues today with almost 2200 students grades 6-12 In 1861 Mr Geo Ransom moved from Decatur (IL) bought some land here renamed it "Ransom Township" after himself & others families involved thereIn 1870 Mr William Hines started production of cornmeal here also later known as Hardeman’s Corn Meal Company & continued doing so until 1893 Also during this time another store called Hennigan’s opened up near where we stand today called The Merchants Store This place would eventually become known as "Hardeman's Mills" After Hardeman's closed down around 1900 other stores opened up including Shoe House & Hardware Store next door which continues to operate today

O'Fallon is located near the center of Cook County and is bordered by the Carbondale metropolitan area to the south and east, Uniontown to the north, and Rockford to the west. O'Fallon's history can be traced back to 1847 when Anthony McNamara founded a small family farmstead on the current site of O'Fallon Township. The village of O’Fallon was platted in 1854 by James Kapp and Isadore Beecher. The first post office was established in 1856, and John Ahern became its first director. In 1870, Jonaquin McCabe organized a Female Temperance Society which functioned until 1875 when it disbanded because of lack of support from local authorities. In 1899-1900, during Chicago's great fire (the Great Chicago Fire), many residents abandoned their homes in what is now downtown Chicago in order to escape damage or injury. Some may have chosen this location due to its close proximity to business districts and other major cities then existing within Cook County; however others may have been motivated by political events taking place nearby such as elections that year or concerns about future fires being fought more locally than elsewhere in America given then increasing concern over rapid growth rates across much of North America at that time. Whatever reasons were behind these departures from downtownChicago during that time period are unknown but they likely had some sort of impact on development for portions of today's northeast side adjacent to where McCormack Road met Interstate 90/I-290 Prioritizing economic development over environmental protection likely led developers later years towards choosing this area for new construction especially since there were few restrictions on building densities then compared with today's zoning laws governing land use throughout most Cook County jurisdictions including those adjoining northwest suburban areas now considered part of Chicago proper although some vestiges remain within those boundaries including what are now Midway Park Gardens & Lawndale annexed into Oak Lawn while largely rural farmland around present day Daley Heights remains mostly undeveloped except for a few scattered housing developments along Northwest Side streets built after World War II as apartment complexes replacing large factories vacated suddenly following production declines related mainly to war output priorities rather than increased demand for housing outside urban agglomerations
